India break 65-year-old Test record in the second match against West Indies

Team India have broken a 64-year old Test cricket record after Shubman Gill's men recorded 50+ partnerships for each of the first five wickets in a Test innings against West Indies.

This unique feat was achieved by India against England at Mumbai in 1993 and against Australia at Ahmedabad in 2023. Meanwhile, the last time an opposition achieved this against West Indies was way back in 1960, when Australia did it in the tied Test at the Gabba.

After electing to bat first in the second Test at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, opener Yashasvi Jaiswal hammered 175 runs before he was runout orchestrated by Chanderpaul and wicketkeeper Tevin Imlach. Skipper Gill anchored the innings to get to his 10th Test century and was unbeaten on 129, while Sai Sudharsan fell short of his maiden ton by 13 runs.

Shubman Gill breaks records
Gill's innings saw him break several batting records. The 26-year-old is now the highest run-scorer for India in World Test Championship history. In the WTC, Gill has played 39 matches (including the Delhi Test) and scored 2,757 runs at an average of 42.41. His highest score in the WTC so far is 269, and he has registered 9 centuries and 9 fifties.

He surpassed the legendary Virat Kohli Kohli, who retired from Test cricket earlier this year, played 46 matches in the WTC and scored 2,617 runs at an average of 35.36, with a highest score of 254 not out, with five tons and 11 half centuries.

Gill has now taken just 12 innings to reach five centuries as India’s Test captain, the second-fastest by an Indian skipper, only behind the great Sunil Gavaskar, who achieved the feat in only 10 innings, while Virat Kohli needed 18 innings to reach the same mark.

Globally, only Alastair Cook (9 innings) and Gavaskar (10) have managed to do it quicker than Gill.

The young opener has also joined an exclusive list of Indian captains to score five Test centuries in a single calendar year, a record previously achieved only by Virat Kohli in 2017 and 2018.

This dominant batting performance saw India declare at 518/5. It followed India’s emphatic victory in the first Test at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, where they won by an innings and 140 runs, taking a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.

Looking at the broader numbers, there have been 25 Test centuries in the last 14 India vs West Indies Tests since 2013, with 23 coming from Indian batters. Roston Chase remains the only West Indies player to reach three figures during this period, having done it twice.
