Alipore Meteorological Department has issued a weather alert for storms and heavy rain in Kolkata and several districts in South Bengal. The residents have been advised to brace for continued heavy rain and storms until April 30. As per the weather department, the region is expected to experience rainfall and strong winds over the coming days, with an official weather alert in place until Wednesday. During this time, the air speeds could reach up to 70 kilometers per hour.
Expect cooler temperatures
However, the good thing is that the rainfall has provided a welcome respite from the boiling heat. Due to the rain, there has been a significant drop in temperatures in Kolkata and regions nearby. On Sunday, the city recorded a minimum temperature of 23.6°C while on Saturday, the maximum temperature was 34.2°C.
Orange Alert for several districts
The weather department has issued an orange alert for many districts, including Hooghly, West Midnapore, Jhargram, Purulia, Bankura, East Burdwan, and West Burdwan. The department has warned that these regions may receive between 7 to 11 centimeters of rain, along with strong winds reaching speeds of up to 70 kilometers per hour. Thunderstorms are expected to persist across much of Bengal until Wednesday, with conditions remaining unstable.
Heavy rainfall expected in North Bengal
North Bengal will also be affected with heavy rainfall. Districts like Darjeeling, North Dinajpur, Alipurduar, and Jalpaiguri will experience significant rain on Sunday and Monday winds speed ranging from 50 to 60 kilometers per hour.
In addition to the rainfall, temperatures in the region are expected to drop by 3 to 5 degrees over the next few days. This cooler trend, along with the ongoing rainfall, will bring additional relief from the earlier intense heat.
So residents of both South and North Bengal, including Kolkata, should stay alert for continuing rain and storms. While these weather conditions may cause some inconvenience, the cooler temperatures and rainfall offer much-needed relief from the heat.
Apparently, most of the regions in India are experiencing boiling heat. And rainfall in Kolkata and other parts of Bengal is no less than a sigh of relief!
