During Navratri, which occurs four times a year, Goddess Durga and her nine forms are worshipped. Also, fasts are observed for 9 days as per the scriptures to please the Goddess. As soon as Navratri begins, Ghat Sthapana is done first. If Ghat Sthapana is not done during Navratri, then there is no benefit of the Navratri fast. During Navratri, Ghat Sthapana is done with an earthen pot, which is said to be the most sacred, whereas there is no benefit in installing an urn made of other metals. During Ghat Sthapana, water is filled in an earthen pot, and mango leaves and coconut are placed on top of it.

Ghat Sthapana is done on the first day of the Navratri fast.
Giving more information, Haridwar's learned religious leader Pandit Shridhar Shastri says that Ghat Sthapana is done on the first day of Navratri fast. Ghat Sthapana has been done with an earthen pot since ancient times, but with the changing times, steel or other metal urns are used in place of earthen pots. Goddess Maa is pleased when an earthen urn is installed in Navratri, and she blesses with happiness and prosperity. According to the Vedic calendar, the urn is installed on the first day at an auspicious time.
Religious beliefs
Since ancient times, there has been a religious belief in installing an earthen urn during Navratri. According to religious texts, soil is considered sacred, due to which, by installing the ghat at the beginning of Navratri, Goddess Maa provides complete fruits. When the ghat is installed, pure water is filled in an earthen pot (kalash), and 9 mango leaves are placed on it, and a Kalawa is tied on a coconut filled with water.

An earthen urn is necessary.
According to beliefs, the creation of the universe is made up of air, fire, water, earth, sky, and filling water in an earthen pot and placing mango leaves, a coconut filled with water is considered a symbol of the creation of fire, water, air, earth, sky. If an urn made of steel or other metal is installed during the days of Navratri, then it does not get any fruit of Navratri.
