A competitive field of six high-quality runners is set to go under the starter’s orders in the JSK1 Best Odds Eve Champion Trophy, the first graded event of the Pune racing season, to be held at the iconic Pune Race Course on Sunday.
Among the six, three standout contenders — Arkadian, Duke of Tuscany, and El Greco — appear to hold the edge, and one of them is widely expected to return to the paddock with the coveted silverware.
Arkadian, who finished an impressive runner-up in the prestigious Maharaja’s Gold Cup (Gr.2) at Bengaluru, brings strong form to the table. Piloted by the capable G. Vivek, Arkadian’s finishing effort behind the classy Positano in that demanding contest underlines his readiness for this 2000-metre test. The colt, trained by a seasoned professional, looks well-prepared to go one better this time.
Duke of Tuscany, known for his consistency and staying prowess, should not be overlooked. With steady improvement in recent runs and fitness peaking at the right moment, he is expected to pose a serious challenge.
El Greco, the third of the leading trio, also commands respect with his fluid strides and strong late finishes. If he can stay in touch with the leaders early, his trademark acceleration in the straight could tilt the balance in his favour.
