According to the scriptures, the last rites or cremation are performed so that if the soul has any attachment left towards its body, it gets rid of it, because after this, it takes a new body or goes to heaven.

Why do we do 16 Shringar before the last rites of a Suhagin?

If someone dies untimely, some special rituals are performed for the peace of his/her soul. When a married woman dies, the importance of doing 16 Shringar (worship) before her cremation is told. This is related to the Ramayana period.
