A British tourist has tragically died three months after he was attacked at random while on vacation in Spain.

Marshall Latham, 68, from Cheshire, was assaulted by a stranger in Fuerteventura. The retired carpenter was left in a coma with life-changing injuries after he was suddenly punched in the street as he walked back to his holiday apartment on December 10.

The 68-year-old endured a severe injury after he dropped to the floor and knocked his head on concrete. He was hospitalised with serious injuries in Gran Canaria and had part of his skull removed - which measured to 14cm. Medics also drained his brain to help lower the pressure. His family launched a fundraiser and transferred him to the Aintree Hospital back in the UK.

Marshall sadly died at the Walton Centre on March 16. During his time in hospital he had suffered from pneumonia twice. His brother-in-law previously explained how he was knocked unconscious during the unprovoked attack.

He told The Nantwich News: "Lynn had gone back to their apartment, and Marsh stayed for another drink and was walking home when something has happened. He was hit by this guy, somewhere near a taxi rank, and he has gone down and hit his head on the concrete floor. Witnesses have told police this was a completely unprovoked punch, there was no argument and they did not know each other."

A British man, aged 32, was identified on and was reportedly arrested as he tried to fly home to Glasgow. He appeared in court on suspicion of wounding and was released on bail. Local police issued a statement in February and said: “A 32-year-old man whose initials are TD was held at Fuerteventura Airport after being identified from CCTV. He was handed over to the courts following his arrest.”

An inquest has been requested due to the cause of death being considered 'unnatural'. The inquest has been suspended until August as police overseas investigate the incident. The attack left Marshall's hometown in mourning as his close friends demanded justice following the tragedy.

Allen Gage, councillor for Crewe and Natwich, earlier wrote on social media: “We need justice. A much cherished friend of mine, a gentleman that would give you the shirt from his back was sadly attacked and put in a coma while in Spain just before . He literally crossed the road to help someone out - no surprise there."

Marshall's loved ones updated a GoFundMe page following his death and said: "We brought him back to a hospital in the UK last week via air ambulance where he received incredible care and the staff were really great but sadly his health deteriorated and on Sunday we said goodbye to him.

"Getting him back to the UK was really important, there were so many of his friends and family that hadn’t seen him. He had lots of visitors every day which was lovely and I’m glad so many people got a chance to say goodbye to him. The start of December when he was attacked feels like such a long time ago and he had been through so much, he is finally at peace now and is no longer suffering."

The organiser added: "It’s more important now than ever that we seek justice for Marsh and we have been back and forth with the solicitors this week understanding how his death changes the case. Thank you for all the kind words and messages we have received. It's been really comforting to know that Marsh was loved by so many people."
