No reality TV show on any channel is as captivating and chilling as the one we are witnessing across the Atlantic.
None of it is entertaining. Quite the opposite. It is a frightening vision of our future should we allow the extremists to gain power in the UK.
And if there is a crumb of comfort amid the gloom it is that the meltdown over there will surely focus minds of voters over here.
- Terence Crawford stripped of world title despite Canelo Alvarez win
- Nurse caught engaged in sexual activity with stepson, 15, blasted by his mum
If there is a ray of light, it is that few of the ordinary, centrist voters - who refuse to be force-fed narratives and don’t scream for attention on social media - will be watching the US dumpster fire with anything other than abject horror.
It is what awaits us should, as many fear, Reform or even the Tories - get the keys to Downing Street.
It should convince even the most apathetic UK voter to use the one tool at their disposal at the next General Election.
In this world of 24-hour news cycles, a real-life Truman Show (wasn’t THAT 1998 movie way ahead of its time?) is outlining the dystopian future that we believed could only come from the movies or the history books.
We are seeing US comedians sidelined and journalists fired for stating actual, documented fact. We are seeing media corporations sued for basic objective reporting.
Is that what we want for this country?
In the US, we are seeing weapons-grade incompetents like Kash Patel performing with jaw-dropping predictability as the least qualified FBI Director in American history.
Liars in the US political system no longer feel the need to apologise when caught out. Instead the climate allows them to double down, safe in the knowledge that a section of the media contingent is now too scared to point out that the Emperor isn’t wearing any clothes.
Is that what we want for this country?
Ordinary, law-abiding citizens continue to be kidnapped off US streets, thrown in vans and detained by Immigration and Customs Officials.
And no, it isn’t colour specific. Nor is it necessarily because they are even illegals. Some have disappeared because of their political views expressed on social media.
As of June this year, more than 1400 international students from 200 US colleages had their “legal status” changed by the state department.
It is what happens when Presidential candidates state their intention to conduct a mass deportation exercise. They don’t just stop at the people they are demonising.
Surprise, surprise, Reform are promised it here and the Tories have tried.
"None of the 800,000 who came in under Boris Johnson wave....will be given Indefinite Leave to Remain" Reform leader Nigel Farage boldly and unapologetically stated on Monday.
Hang the consequences for hotels and restaurants which will see higher prices. Likewise the NHS which will see a dramatically smaller staff and poorer service. You didn't seriously think he was only after the asylum seekers on the small boats, did you?
The man who mentioned Windrush when asked how far his deportation plan who go back, earlier this month, is following the playbook of the current US administration.
And it defies belief to even have to say this in 2025 - but mass deportation is not a mainstream political policy. It defies belief that a man with just five MPs in his corporate lobbying group, compared to 72 in the Lib Dem party, can have his vicious, extremist policies legitimised by this country's biggest media platforms.
Yet this is where the drip feed on breakfast shows, daytime TV and who host of multi-platform media has taken us.
Is it really what we want for this country?
Farage has already refused to condemn, on TV, the racist violence that became a feature of the recent hotel protests.
Tory leader Kemi Badenoch and Shadow Chancellor Mel Stride have both pointedly refused to condemn Elon Musk’s incendiary “fight back or die” comments - widely interpreted as an incitement to violence.
Is that what we want for this country?
It might well be that the current UK prime minister, Sir Keir Starmer, lacks the empathy, the communication skills and the ability to read the room to understand that millions of voters are just not feeling him right now.
That has to be be the only reason why he is patting himself on the back over creating UK jobs and attracting investment from US financial giants while the country is on fire.
It might be that the solution is a socialist government under new management. But abandoning socialism and sanity in this country is surely not an option. The alternative is what we are seeing in America.
