The University Grants Commission (UGC) has taken a significant step by issuing show-cause notices to 54 private universities nationwide, including several located in Jharkhand. This action stems from these institutions' failure to provide necessary information about themselves, as mandated by the UGC.
In June 2024, the UGC had instructed all universities to publish essential details on their official websites to promote transparency. The recent notices are a direct consequence of non-compliance with this directive.
Jharkhand Universities Under Scrutiny
Among the universities flagged by the UGC, four private institutions in Jharkhand have been identified as defaulters. These include:
- Amity University Ranchi
- Sainath University Ranchi
- Capital University Koderma
- AISECT University Hazaribagh
UGC's Directives for Compliance
The UGC has mandated that all universities must disclose comprehensive information by June 10, 2024, in accordance with Section 13 of the UGC Act, 1956. This includes:
- Regular updates to their websites
- Information accessible on the homepage without requiring registration
- A search feature for user convenience
Additionally, universities are required to submit the necessary information in a specified format to the UGC's website.
Opportunity for Compliance
The UGC is providing these universities another chance to comply with the guidelines. Under Section 13 of the UGC Act, 1956, the UGC retains the authority to inspect universities to evaluate their financial, educational, examination, and research standards. This process includes gathering information from the universities prior to conducting site inspections, which ultimately informs the UGC's decision regarding recognition.
