Rasmus Hojlund's future at Manchester United is hanging in the balance, with reports suggesting a permanent move to Napoli could be on the cards if the Italian club secures a spot in next season's Champions League. The striker's position at Old Trafford became uncertain when Benjamin Sesko was brought in as the new centre-forward. It was reported that Hojlund might have to consider his options if he felt his place in the team was under threat.
As predicted, Hojlund found himself sidelined at the start of the Premier League season, and rumours of his departure began to circulate. AC Milan expressed interest in the player but were not prepared to commit to a purchase option for next summer, a condition that did not sit well with either Hojlund or United.
Hojlund was keen to find a club where he could settle for the long term, and it was at this point that Napoli emerged as the frontrunners.
On transfer deadline day, an agreement was reached whereby Napoli would pay a £5.2m loan fee and a further £38m to make the deal permanent, subject to certain conditions being met.
According to Calciomercato, these conditions are now coming into focus.
The most significant clause stipulates that Hojlund will join Napoli permanently if they qualify for the Champions League next season - a realistic prospect given that they are the reigning champions in Italy.
The remaining two clauses seem to be more ambiguous, but they pertain to the number of appearances he makes this season and the number of goals he scores.
Upon signing permanently, it is believed that the Dane would be offered a five-year contract, with a £73.78m release clause included in that agreement.
Hojlund represented Denmark in their stalemate against Scotland on Friday evening and will be eager to make his debut for Napoli when they journey to Fiorentina next Saturday.
A permanent move away from Old Trafford would be good news for United, who have deemed him surplus to requirements and could do with the money generated from his sale.
After his loan switch to Napoli was confirmed, Hojlund said: "It's different now, obviously, as I come with more experience and I'm a better football player.
"I come with a lot of international experience, I played in the Premier League, Champions League, Europa League, and in multiple countries. I come with a lot to prove. I want to show myself in the best team in Italy and Napoli is going to be very, very good.
"I always work hard, I like to say I want to die on the pitch, to give everything for the team, to score goals, create, and fight for everything."
