Spanish police have launched a probe into the death of a man identified as a British national who was found "naked" on waste ground in Majorca. The nationality of the man was confirmed by local police, who added they were awaiting the results of an autopsy to determine their next move.
The discovery was made by a group of workers around noon local time (11am GMT) on Monday. One of them raised the alarm after spotting the man's body in the bushes as they worked in the area. The man was lying lifeless on his back and had no clothes on, according to local reports.
Upon their arrival, police cordoned off the area, located near a stunning cove beach in the southeast of Majorca, called Cala Lombards.
Police were not ruling out any possible scenario until the post-mortem examination, but sources claimed there were no evident signs of violence on the man's body or at the scene. The autopsy is due to take place later today (November 4) at the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Palma.
The Civil Guard, which is the police force investigating, said today: "The dead man has been identified as a British national. The alarm was raised yesterday afternoon by a worker in the area around midday.
"The area in question is Cala Llombards in the municipality of Santanyi."
The force spokesman said he wasn't able to confirm local reports that the dead man was naked when he was found.
He added: "It is something that the autopsy will have to confirm, but we understand he was 64 years old."
Detectives haven't yet commented on whether he was holidaying in Majorca or lived on the island, but he is believed to have been a resident.
One person living near the spot where he was found dead said he thought he had seen the man walking alone in the area before yesterday's grim discovery.
The Express has contacted the Foreign Office for comment.
