It can be tricky to remove stubborn stains from grimy kitchen appliances without using harsh chemicals and leaving streaks. Whether it's residue left from cooking or fingerprints, the marks can linger and make our kitchens look grubby.
However, cleaning experts have revealed one unusual item that can help tackle oven stains and marks on stainless steel appliances. The product is a staple in most homes and can help save you money on expensive cleaning products. The experts insist it is effective in making appliances "look as good as new".
While most people associate olive oil with cooking or salad dressings, it turns out the ingredient is also a handy cleaning tool. It helps lift away grease and watermarks without leaving streaks.
The experts say olive oil is best used to clean stainless steel fridges, ovens and dishwashers. The technique is simple and just requires olive oil and microfiber cloths.
As reported by Homes and Gardens, cleaning expert Elizabeth Shields said: "Olive oil adds a lovely shine to stainless steel surfaces. When you buff it in, it leaves a protective film over the steel to restore that sleek, polished look that sometimes gets dulled over time.
"If you're in the middle of cooking and notice your pots or appliances look a little dull, you can grab that bottle of olive oil without having to make a special trip to the store. You don't have to worry about any overpowering scents, too."
The experts advise initially wiping down a surface with a damp cloth to remove residue. Then add a few drops of olive oil to a cloth and wipe the surface using gentle circular motions.
You should always make sure to remove any excess oil using a separate cloth afterwards. This will then reveal a clean and streak-free shine.
Olive oil is an effective cleaning agent as it dissolves grease-based stains. It offers a natural, chemical-free alternative to commercial cleaners which often leave strong smells due to their harsh ingredients.
