Danielle Collins has confirmed that she will be ending her season after the US Open. The American was set to retire at the end of 2024, but changed her mind when some of her personal circumstances changed, and decided to continue playing.
It's been a somewhat disappointing season for the former world No. 7, who has struggled for form and faced some physical setbacks, and she will now play her last tournament of the year in Flushing Meadows.
Collins, who has a 1-3 record for the North American hard-court swing so far, took to social media to confirm that she would not play another tournament this year after the US Open. "On the mend. New York soon for my last event of the year," she wrote in the caption of her latest Instagram post.
The current world No. 57 raised concerns when she screamed during her first-round defeat to Taylor Townsend in Cincinnati last week. Collins was in tears as she left the court without her bags when she lost 6-4 7-6(2), and Townsend carried them off on her behalf.
Afterwards, Collins took to social media to reveal that she had been carrying an injury, hitting out at "keyboard warriors" in a lengthy statement.
"Anyone who has a herniated disc knows my pain. It's no surprise the keyboard warriors can't understand or relate, as they've been too busy sitting on their asses judging people who show up and try to give it their best even on days that suck," she penned.
"Thank you to everyone who has been praying for my injury and thank you to Taylor Townsend for being the best of the best."
Collins had initially planned to retire at the end of the 2024 season, announcing the news at the beginning of the year at the Australian Open. The American, who has rheumatoid arthritis and endometriosis, hoped to end her career and start a family.
She enjoyed one of her best runs, winning back-to-back titles at the Miami Open - her biggest title ever - and Charleston, and returning to the world's top 10. But an abdominal issue forced her out of the Olympics, and she skipped several events towards the end of the year, also going on a losing run.
In October, Collins backtracked on her retirement as she bravely opened up about her health issues and fertility journey.
"While I was very excited and eager to wrap up my tennis career on a high note this year and jump headfirst into my next chapter of life, things have not gone as planned," she wrote on Instagram.
"I will be back on tour in 2025. While there are no guarantees in life, I hope to build on my 2024 momentum and keep playing until there is more certainty around my personal fertility journey. The only guarantee for now will be some more epic matches."
Collins' 2025 season will now end after the US Open. While she has not announced whether she will continue playing into 2026, there are promising signs, as she said Flushing Meadows was her last event "of the year", and not for good.
