The Indian T20 team performed pretty well in the 5-match series against Australia but after guiding India to another T20 series win, head coach Gautam Gambhir had a moment of honest reflection. With just a few months left before the 2026 T20 World Cup, he admitted that the team isn’t quite where he wants it to be, especially when it comes to fitness.
Speaking shortly after India’s 2–1 victory over Australia, Gautam Gambhir acknowledged that while the results were positive, there were still areas that needed attention. The Australian side wasn’t at full strength as the main players were preparing for upcoming Ashes and despite India maintaining their unbeaten T20I record under his leadership, he saw signs that improvement was necessary if the team wanted to perform under real pressure.
In a candid conversation, Gautam Gambhir explained that physical readiness goes beyond just staying in shape. To him, fitness is the foundation of mental strength, something he believes is crucial in high-pressure matches. He shared that he has already discussed this with the players, emphasising that being physically sharp directly translates to staying calm and composed during tough moments.
Looking ahead, Gautam Gambhir’s attention is split between two major goals, the upcoming Test series against South Africa and the T20 World Cup on the home soil. The two-Test series, beginning November 14 at Eden Gardens and continuing in Guwahati from November 22, is vital for India’s World Test Championship campaign. But even as the red-ball season takes centre stage, Gautam Gambhir remains clear that fitness will remain a top priority in preparation for the T20 spectacle.

He explained that the next three months will be crucial for the team to reach the desired fitness standards. He added that their goal is to be quicker, sharper and mentally stronger and hinted that the coming phase will demand discipline and commitment from every player.
Gautam Gambhir’s message is clear – winning series is good but being truly ready for the World Cup requires more than skill. It needs endurance, mindset and unity. As India’s cricket calendar heats up, the coach seems determined to ensure the team isn’t just playing well but playing at its physical and mental peak when it matters the most.
