Krishnagiri: A lone wild elephant trampled a man to death at Veppanapalli, in Krishnagiri district late on Sunday night.
The deceased has been identified as P Venkatesan, 40, of Aippikanapally, a mason. Preliminary inquiry revealed that he went to his farmland after finishing work on Sunday evening, where he was suddenly attacked by a wild elephant. Venkatesan suffered severe injuries and died instantly.
The incident came to light when his family went to check on him the next morning after he failed to return home. They alerted Veppanapalli police who recovered the body and shifted it to the Krishnagiri Government Medical College Hospital for a postmortem.
Forest officials suspect one of the two elephant which were recently spotted in the vicinity could be behind the attack. Meanwhile, locals and farmers accused the forest department of failing to monitor wild elephants, which they believe led to the tragedy.
