Donald Trump's son Eric says Premier League club Chelsea asked POTUS to celebrate their World Cup win with them

Earlier this month, Premier League club Chelsea became the first ever club to win the FIFA Club World Cup. This newly formatted competition saw its finals on July 13 at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, United States. The current president of the country, Donald Trump , was the one to hand over the winner's trophy to the team and was seen alongside them as they celebrated this historic win. Now, his son Eric Trump has said that the Chelsea team had requested that the President celebrate their win with them.

Eric Trump says Chelsea team requested that Donald Trump celebrate with them

Premier League club Chelsea won the first-ever FIFA Club World Cup earlier this month. They won the final match 3-0 against Paris Saint-Germain, the French club, and celebrated their grand win in grand style. FIFA President Gianni Infantino and POTUS Donald Trump were with the team on the stage as the team came on to collect their medals and the trophy, and finally the trophy lift by their captain - Reece James.

While the FIFA president moved off the stage at the time of the team celebration, Trump stayed and was seen celebrating with the team, which led to a lot of chatter among fans and the media. And now, a few weeks after that night, Trump's son, Eric, has said that the team itself had asked the POTUS to stay and celebrate with them. He told BBC Sport:

"In terms of FIFA, the winning team invited him to the stage because they said it would be the greatest honour of their life if the President of the United States could present the Club World Cup trophy to the team."

Well, looks like the President had a reason to stay on stage with the winning team, if he had been invited, after all. Or so his son says.

Chelsea captain Reece James though had a different impression
While Eric Trump has come up with a statement on why his father, Donald Trump, stayed with the team at the time of the celebration, Reece James, the Chelsea captain, seemed to have a different impression of the situation. When the team was asked about what they thought of getting to celebrate with the President of the United States, James said:

"They told me that he was going to present the trophy and then exit the stage, and I thought that he was going to exit the stage, but he wanted to stay... He just congratulated me and the team for lifting the trophy and told us to enjoy the moment."

Whether he wanted to stay or was asked to stay, fans are still confused about the matter. But the night belonged to the team, and that's where the spotlight should have been.
