Cuttack: The city remained calm on Monday even as most areas continued to be under curfew. While no fresh cases of violence were reported in the past 24 hours, police stayed on high alert to prevent any flare-ups.
“We’ve taken precautionary steps to maintain peace. Internet services will remain suspended till 7 pm Tuesday,” said Shibo Toppo, ADM, Cuttack.
Essential services such as hospitals, pharmacies and grocery stores remained operational, but police have urged residents to avoid unnecessary movement. Heavy deployment continues, with 60 police platoons and eight paramilitary companies stationed across sensitive zones. Vehicle checks have been intensified at city entry points.
On Monday, VHP had called a bandh in response to the violence during the immersion procession that saw eight people, including Cuttack DCP Rishikesh Khilari, getting injured in a group clash during Durga idol immersion at Dargha Bazaar, early on Saturday.
Following clashes on Saturday and Sunday, the district administration imposed a 36-hour curfew across multiple police station limits, effective till Tuesday 10 am. Internet services were suspended citywide and extended by another 12 hours till 7 pm Tuesday to curb the spread of rumours and inflammatory content.
Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan appealed for calm, assuring that “stringent action will be taken against those found guilty.” Police said several arrests have been made and a manhunt is underway to arrest others involved.
So far, eight individuals have been arrested and three separate cases registered. Shops and commercial establishments remain shut in affected areas, particularly Dargha Bazaar and localities under 13 police jurisdictions. Surveillance through drones and CCTVs is ongoing, and peace committee meetings are being held to restore normalcy.
In a fresh advisory, police have urged citizens to verify news before sharing it online. “Refrain from posting false or provocative content. Strict legal action will be taken against those spreading misinformation,” the statement said.
